Bringing a car into Germany
What a country charges to put a foreign car on its own plates is usually the largest term in a cross-border comparison: on one identical EUR 15,000 car it runs from about EUR 33 to about EUR 16,000 across Europe. Every figure below carries the document it came from and the date it was last checked. Where we have not verified one, this page says so instead of printing a number.
Registration tax
None VerifiedGermany levies no registration tax. The Kraftfahrzeugsteuer is a charge on *keeping* a vehicle on the road, payable a year in advance and recurring, not a one-off levy on putting a foreign car onto German plates. What a used import does cost at the registration office is an administrative fee under the road traffic fee schedule, plus the plates, which the office does not supply — both excluded here like every other fee.

Tolls and road charges
No general charge VerifiedNo general road charge applies to a passenger car. The passenger-car toll legislated in 2015 never took effect. The Warnow tunnel in Rostock and the Herren tunnel in Lübeck charge cars per passage.

The limits below are the ones that attach to a worked example: a car first registered in 2019, old enough that no age-based exemption changes the answer. A newer car can be answered differently, and the records above say on what.
- The registration figure is the tax alone. Plate and administration fees are excluded rather than estimated.
- Transport, plate and administration fees, VAT treatment and customs duty are not included anywhere in this service. Nothing on this page is a landed cost.

Germany is one of 23 national markets this service measures daily from public marketplace listings. The published figures are aggregates: a median needs at least 20 adverts behind it, a quartile at least 50, and counts below 500 are published as a band rather than exactly.
