What is on the market
Every powertrain Sweden publishes enough of to clear the disclosure floor, largest first. The share is of the adverts this service holds for Sweden, so it describes the forecourt rather than the national fleet.

Bringing a car into Sweden
What a destination charges to put a foreign car on its own plates is the term that dominates a cross-border comparison: on one identical EUR 15,000 car it ranges from about EUR 33 to about EUR 16,000 across Europe. Every figure below carries the document it came from and the date somebody last checked it. Where we have not verified one, this page says so rather than printing a plausible number — an unverified rate and a verified one look identical a month later.
Registration tax
None exactSweden levies no registration tax. What it levies instead is a raised annual vehicle tax — malus — on high-emission cars, and that runs for three years from the moment the vehicle first became liable to tax, in Sweden or in another country. An import first registered abroad more than three years ago is therefore outside it deterministically, decidable from the model year alone and without any CO2 figure. A younger car is not modelled here and is refused rather than guessed: the malus is a function of emissions, which this corpus does not hold.

VAT
25% exactStandard VAT rate as published by the European Commission's Taxes in Europe database on 2026-09-06. It is stated here as reference, and no VAT charge is computed anywhere in this service: the rate is not the hard part. A used car bought from a dealer under the margin scheme carries no deductible destination VAT on the price at all, a private sale carries none, and a car that is under six months old or has at or under 6,000 km is a new means of transport and is taxed at this rate on the full price whoever the parties are. Which of those applies is a fact about the transaction, not about the country, and this catalogue does not hold it.

Tolls and road charges
No general charge exactNo general road charge applies to a passenger car. Cars pay congestion tax in Stockholm and Gothenburg, infrastructure charges at Motala, Sundsvall and Skurubron, and the Öresund bridge toll.
Road user charge applies for trucks or truck/trailer combinations with a total weight exceeding 12 tons.
The caveats below are the ones that attach to a worked example: a car first registered in 2019, which is old enough to clear every age threshold the catalogue models. A newer car can be answered differently, and the record above says on what.
- The registration figure is the tax alone. Plate and administration fees are excluded rather than estimated.
- Transport, plate and administration fees, VAT treatment and customs duty are not modelled anywhere in this service. Nothing on this page is a landed cost.
Where these numbers come from
Sweden is one of 23 national markets this service measures daily from public marketplace listings. The published figures are aggregates: a median needs at least 20 adverts behind it, a quartile at least 50, and counts below 500 are published as a band rather than exactly. No advert, seller or individual price is ever published. The full method is here.
